  • New Play Purvis: Othello of Overtown Combines Shakespeare’s Othello with Miami Artist Purvis Young’s Life

Purvis Young|Actor Andre Gainey MIAMI, Aug. 26, 2024 — A groundbreaking new theatrical production, “Purvis: Othello of Overtown,” reimagines Shakespeare’s classic tragedy through the lens of celebrated Florida painter Purvis Young’s life and work. Two free public readings of selected excerpts are scheduled for October in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The three-act play, written by Stockton University Artist in Residence Summer Hill Seven with Grace Arts Center Founder Clare Vickery , explores Young’s artistic journey from Overtown’s poverty-stricken streets to an artist with works in the world’s best known museums of modern art. “This production aims to capture the essence of Purvis Young’s unique artistic vision and his impact on Miami’s cultural landscape,” said Seven. “By interweaving Shakespeare’s themes with Young’s life story, we’re creating a powerful narrative that resonates with both art and theater enthusiasts.” “ The Miami-Dade County Public Library System nurtured Purvis’ talent from the very beginning, connecting his artwork with galleries in New York City and providing his first mural commissions,” said Vickery. “The public library archives contain personal stories and correspondence that surprised me. There is a poignant connection between Shakespeare’s fictional warrior Othello and Purvis Young’s lifelong passion to make art, battles he endured to exhibit his paintings, and live as a working artist.” The readings will feature: Andre Gainey of M Ensemble in the role of Purvis Young Live piano performances by Dillard Center for the Arts graduate Aidan Higgs Operatic interpretations by DCotA alumna Anieyla Wells-Miller Dates and locations : Oct. 16, 6:15–7:30 p.m. , Broward County Main Library, Fort Lauderdale Oct. 19, 2–4 p.m. , Miami-Dade Public Library System, Main Library Miami Miami-Dade Public Libraries’ permanent art collection, including many artworks by Young, can be viewed in person and online . • Delray Beach's Own Coco Gauff Makes History: From Florida Courts to Olympic Flag Bearer

Delray Beach, FL In a groundbreaking announcement, Team USA has revealed its flag-bearers for the upcoming Paris Olympics opening ceremony. Tennis sensation Coco Gauff, fresh off her US Open triumph, will make history as the first-ever tennis player to carry the Stars and Stripes. The 20-year-old phenom from Delray Beach, Florida, will share this prestigious honor with basketball legend LeBron James, a four-time NBA champion. Gauff's selection marks a poignant moment in her career, especially after the heartbreak of missing the Tokyo Olympics due to a positive COVID-19 test. "I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the opening ceremony," Gauff said in a statement. "I could not be more-proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is." The duo's selection came through a democratic process, with fellow US athletes casting their votes. USOCP CEO Sarah Hirshland praised Gauff's nomination, highlighting the young star's impact both on and off the court. Gauff's meteoric rise began at Wimbledon in 2019 when, at just 15, she stunned the world by defeating her Idol Venus Williams. Last year, she clinched her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open, solidifying her status as tennis royalty. Currently ranked World No. 2, Gauff is set to compete in both singles and doubles events on the hallowed clay courts of Roland Garros. As the Olympic tennis tournament kicks off this Saturday, all eyes will be on this young champion from Delray Beach as she aims to add Olympic glory to her already impressive resume. -end-
