On a night dedicated to honoring the past while celebrating the future of women’s basketball, Susan Summons stepped onto the court at an Unrivaled game for a special on-court appearance that carried deep meaning.

Summons, the longtime head women’s basketball coach at Miami Dade College and a WBL Pro Legend, was recognized in front of a packed arena filled with fans, players, and pioneers of the game. The moment served as a powerful reminder that today’s growth in women’s basketball is built on decades of leadership, mentorship, and perseverance.

The appearance was made possible by Legends of the Ball Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and uplifting the history of women’s basketball by honoring the trailblazers who helped shape the sport.

“Susan Summons joined us as a special guest of Legends of the Ball, Inc. at our collaborative event with Unrivaled honoring the history of the Women’s Basketball League and the African American women who played in it. As a WBL trailblazer and Hall of Fame coach, Susan represents the lasting impact of that era — both on the court and in the coaching ranks. It was a powerful and emotional celebration of our shared history.”— Liz McQuitter, Founder, Legends of the Ball, Inc.

For Summons, the recognition represented far more than a ceremonial walk onto the court. It was a reflection of a career spent building opportunity for young women and ensuring that the game’s pioneers are never forgotten.

“Being honored in this way, surrounded by so many people who love and respect the game, was incredibly meaningful. Moments like this remind you that the work, the commitment, and the belief in women’s basketball truly matter — not just for today, but for generations to come.”

Throughout the night, Legends of the Ball Inc. members were visible across the arena, united in a shared message: everyone loves history — and women’s basketball history deserves to be seen, celebrated, and preserved.

As Unrivaled continues pushing the women’s game forward with innovation and visibility, moments like this ensure the foundation remains strong. Honoring leaders like Susan Summons doesn’t just celebrate the past — it reinforces the future.
